While on the way to Barbie’s house, Mos’ and his mother argued over the phone.

“Ma, you are trippin’ yo’! You makin’ all this a big deal when it don’t need to be!” Mos’ exclaimed.

He was still trying to wrap his mind around his mother’s behavior and why she thought it was okay to keep coming after Barbie. One of his biggest regrets was telling her that Psalm’s girlfriend was shot and damn near killed because Alvita wouldn’t stop telling him that Barbie was bad luck.

“Ma, how do you know she’s bad luck and you don’t even know her?”

“I don’t have to know anybody to see evil in them!” Alvita shouted back.

Alvita didn’t like that her son was barely answering the phone for her now and blamed Barbie for putting something on her son to keep him away.

Alvita was from Jamaica and knew all about the secrets of Voodoo. Her culture practiced it heavily, so she didn’t put shit past anyone. From the moment Mos’ started hanging with Barbie, he started putting distance between them, leaving Alvita to believe that Barbie put a spell on him.

“You’ve been eating this woman’s food, hanging around her children and God knows what else!” Alvita exclaimed out of frustration.

“Mama! That’s what people do when they are datin’! What you want me to do? Go to her house and not eat? Walk past her kids and act like they don’t exist? Mama, do you really hear yo’self?” Mos’ asked, shaking his head.

“Do you hear yourself?” Alvita asked.

Her child had never talked to her like this, so this was just another reason she believed Barbie had him under some sort of hypnosis.

“Yeah, I hear myself, mama,” Mos’ replied before sighing.

“Well, you’d know you sound stupid!” Alvita barked, breaking Mos’ heart.

Mos’s mother had never called him stupid before, and it hurt. Mos’ didn’t get where all this was coming from, but he decided it was time to do what was best for him. He refused to argue with his mama over something that wasn’t even her damn business.

“Mama, I’m ‘bout to hang up,” He said.

Before Alvita could reply, he did something he’d never done before. He hung up in her face. She tried calling back, but he rejected the call.

While up the street from Barbie’s, Mos’ reflected on his parent’s relationship and wondered if his father might’ve hurt his mama or left her for an American woman because nothing else made sense. The more Mos’ thought about it he believed his mother was speaking from a hurt place.

Alvita continued to call Mos,’ but he didn’t answer. When he parked in Barbie’s driveway, he powered his phone off and proceeded up the driveway. When he reached the front door, he rang the doorbell. He smiled when he heard Unique’s voice. At the same time, his feelings were still hurt by his mother’s words.

Why the fuck would she say some shit like that to me? He wondered.

His feelings temporarily faded when Barbie opened the door and greeted him with a hug and a kiss.
